PhoneSmart Raises More Than $1,000 For Cancer Research With “Toes for a Kure”

PhoneSmart helped attendees at two recent self storage trade shows put their best feet forward to raise more than $1,000 for cancer research.

“Toes for a Kure” encouraged attendees of the Self Storage Association Spring Conference in Atlanta and the Inside Self Storage World Expo in Las Vegas to stop by the PhoneSmart booth wearing open-toe shoes, sandals or flip-flops.  For each person who did participate, PhoneSmart pledged to donate $10 to Kure It Cancer Research.  By the end of the second weekend, Toes for a  Kure had generated a $1,100 donation.

The inspiration for Toes for a Kure came from Kure It founder Barry Hoeven.  Hoeven, an executive in the self storage industry, is battling kidney cancer.  One side effect of his treatment is frequent pain and discomfort in his feet.  As a result, Hoeven can often be found wearing sandals or flip-flops, even when wearing normal business attire.

“Statistics say one in three people will be faced with some form of cancer during their lifetime,” Tron Jordheim, PhoneSmart Director of Operations said.  “Better, more easily accessible treatments need to be made available.  With Toes for a Kure, we wanted to have a bit of the fun at the trade shows while highlighting all the great work Barry Hoeven and Kure It is doing.”

About Kure It

The idea to establish Kure It came after Barry Hoeven was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1998 while on a family vacation.  Very soon after diagnosis, Barry began to compile information about his cancer including speaking with prominent specialists in the field.  He recognized early on that there is a grave disconnect between the amount of people afflicted with kidney cancer and the amount of funding and research being conducted to find a cure.  It became clear to him that more research needed to be done.

In April of 2007, Barry partnered with City of Hope to create a fund called Kure It! Kidney Cancer Research Fund, which raised over $400,000 with the help of friends, family and colleagues.  In January 2010, all involved determined the time had come to establish Kure It, Inc. as an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization; allowing for a broader range of opportunities resulting in a greater impact.

Kure It’s goal is to be the leader in granting funds to kidney and other cancer researchers conducting innovative research projects to better treat and ultimately cure kidney and other orphan cancers.
