San Diego Self Storage (SDSS) initiated a recycling program to benefit local non-profit organizations that resulted in the presentation of the inaugural donation of $270 to the Steele Canyon Regiment Color Guard Team located at Steele Canyon High School in Spring Valley. The Steele Canyon Regiment Color Guard Team is an integral component of the Steele Canyon High School Cougar Marching Band. According to the SDSS Recycling Program chair Sandra Flores, “We offer bottles of water to our tenants and ask them to return the empty containers to our facilities, where we group them with empty containers from our corporate offices. With 17 facilities in San Diego, we realized that we could accumulate a significant number of recyclable items that we could redeem for cash, and then convert that cash into a meaningful charitable donation. Our facility managers select recipients where they perceive the need to be most. Two positive outcomes result from this campaign: we’re helping our community organizations and we’re helping the environment. It’s a win-win situation.” The Steele Canyon Regiment Winter Color Guard took first place among 16 teams competing in Los Angeles last February, which is comprised primarily of freshmen and sophomores. This equates to a significant achievement for the students who helped form the team only three years ago and competed against teams who have been established for many years.
