Beginning on Thursday, there will be a series of auctions in the county, beginning at 10 a.m. in Tuckahoe and concluding at noon in Elmsford. Hunters looking for more fun in Port Chester can go to Westy on North Main Street at 10:45 a.m. or Boston Post Road at 11:15 a.m. Registration begins 30 minutes before the auctions.
United Country Absolute Auction and Realty will auction the units with abandoned property to the highest bidder. Self-storage operators are permitted to auction occupants’ goods for certain violations after a period of time, including non-payment.
According to New York state law, “The owner of a self-storage facility has a lien upon all personal property stored at a facility for occupancy or other charges. … An owner’s lien may be enforced by sale of the goods that have been removed after notice [is given] to all persons known to claim an interest in the goods.”
Units can only be purchased in cash, and are sold in “bulk”; individual pieces will not be up for auction. Winning bidders must put their own padlocks on their new units and must remove the goods within 48 hours of the purchase. Due to safety concerns, only adults are permitted to attend the auctions.
