U-Haul Expands Operations to Wake Forest, N.C. In Historic Plant

In what was formerly the historic Burlington Mills plant, U-Haul Company of Raleigh has opened a new center, U-Haul Moving and Storage of Wake Forest, at 9701 Capital Blvd in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The property sits on 35.16 acres and contains several buildings totaling 324,841 square feet, including, two brick buildings that were formerly used as an old boiler house and water-filtration plant, respectively.
Paul Smedberg, marketing company president U-Haul Company of Raleigh, explained the historic nature of this building. As an old mill, many members of the community have grandfathers and other family members who used to work in the plant. The building was a landmark in the Wake Forest community. After it had been sitting vacant for years, U-Haul looked at the building as an asset where most saw it as liability.

“This building is a landmark facility for both U-Haul and the community,” Smedberg stated. “I can say I’m proud that we are reusing this historic facility instead of destroying it. Not many companies do this.”

Preliminary plans call for this property to be used for self-storage, climate-controlled self-storage, U-Box pod storage, RV parking and possibly a future repair shop. Although there is still much work to do in the building, the center is currently open for business renting trucks, trailers, U-Box pod and moving supplies.

Smedberg is excited to bring U-Haul into Wake Forest. It is a fast-growing community… and the opening of this center will allow U-Haul to serve not only the Wake Forest community but also the nearby Raleigh area.

The opening of this facility is driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings

About U-Haul

Since 1945, U-Haul has been serving do-it-yourself movers and their households. Like many other successful ventures, the concept for U-Haul was generated out of need. After World War II, there existed the widespread need for do-it-yourself moving equipment that would be available on a one-way, nationwide basis. U-Haul co-founders L.S. “Sam” Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty Shoen, recognized that need and acted upon it. Their visionary approach spread the cost of ownership among many users, facilitating the mobility of the populations of the U.S. and Canada. The covered wagon of the pioneers morphed into orange U-Haul trailers. For more information, please visit: https://www.uhaul.com
