“I thought she had just left to go to the restroom,” Darden said. “I walked over to our display unit, opened it, and my manager was in there.”
At the same time, an armed robber came back into the office. He told Darden and his female manger to give him their cell phones, and lock themselves into the unit. By the time the robber left the store, he also had the manager’s husband in the unit. However, while trying to figure out a way to steal the security monitors, which were the only items he wanted, he fell victim to his own errors—not making sure the door was secure so his hostages couldn’t set themselves free, and leaving the cell phones on the floor right outside of the display unit. Darden was able to reach his phone and alert the police.
The man convicted of the robbery is now serving a 10-year prison sentence.
