Troy Downing, formerly Montana’s State Auditor and a veteran of both the U.S. Air Force/Air National Guard and the self-storage industry, is now Congressman-elect Downing. He will serve Montana’s 2nd Congressional District, which covers the central and eastern parts of the Treasure State.
Downing began his career in education as a research scientist and educator at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. In the 1990s, he founded a technology startup company that he successfully merged with Yahoo! Inc. He then went on to help other startup companies succeed through seed funding and mentorship.
Downing’s strong sense of public service led him to enlist after 9/11 in the U.S. Air Force/Air National Guard, serving eight years in a Combat Search and Rescue squadron and serving two tours of duty in Afghanistan. Today, he continues his service to veterans as a volunteer and former board member of the Warriors and Quiet Waters (WQW) Foundation. The foundation is a Montana-based organization that uses fly fishing and Montana’s natural beauty as simple but effective healing therapy for post-9/11 combat veterans and their families.
Following his service to the country, Downing founded SAGE insurance Servicing, a nationwide commercial insurance company offering servicing for tenant insurance programs. He also became the CEO of AC Self Storage Solutions, a firm that acquires, manages, and disposes of self-storage commercial real estate. With offices in Big Sky, Montana, and Newport Beach, California, AC Self Storage Solutions has completed over $2 billion in commercial real estate transactions and over $300 million in self-storage acquisitions and management.
Along with AC Self Storage Solutions, Downing has been a mainstay at the Self Storage Association’s annual Ski Workshop and is a former member of the Charity Storage board. Downing and his wife, Heather, have four grown children and live in Helena, Montana.
