Lock America CEO Frank Minnella Passes Away
On March 26, 2025, Franklin “Frank” Dennis Minnella, co-founder and CEO of Lock America, passed away. He is survived by his wife Betty, his brothers Thomas and John, his five children (Michelle Glickman, Karina Montes, Watson Visuwan, Lindsay Case, and Miranda Ramsay), 14 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Described in his obituary as a “visionary businessman,” Minnella co-founded Lock America in 1981 with his partner Steve Shiao. He played a pivotal role in the growth of multiple successful ventures throughout his life. His entrepreneurial spirit, determination, and leadership style left an indelible mark on the self-storage industry and other businesses that he had a hand in.
“Frank and Steve pioneered and patented many innovative products for industries such as self-storage, ATM, petroleum and propane marketing, information destruction, and vending. Together they developed a number of innovative products with their industry partners, most notably the Enforcer cylinder lock system for self-storage and the Fill Valve Lock for propane. Frank always loved solving his customers’ security problems, but it was engagement with people, his family, his team and his customers and his industry colleagues that he enjoyed the most,” a press release distributed by Lock America stated. “Frank was a teacher and a team leader, but he was also a friend and a mentor, for more than 40 years. Frank always loved solving his customers’ security problems, but it was engagement with people, his family, his team and his customers and industry colleagues that he enjoyed the most. He developed a strong team at Lock America, and they are dedicated to continuing his legacy in the future.”
He will be remembered for his generosity, wisdom, quick wit, and the strong values he instilled in those around him. Minnella’s family, friends, and co-workers honored his remarkable life through A Celebration of Life on April 19, 2025.
Those who wish to honor his memory may contribute to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
