New York City Leads U.S. in Self-Storage Conversion Projects

New York City has become the nation’s leader in transforming industrial and retail spaces into self-storage facilities, according to a report by Storage Cafe. The city's rich history of industrial and commercial activity has left it with an abundance of warehouses, office spaces, and former industrial buildings ready for adaptive reuse.

Despite the growth in adaptive reuse, NYC’s self-storage market remains undersupplied. Per capita inventory across the boroughs averages just 1–1.6 square feet. This scarcity has driven prices to some of the highest in the country, with monthly rents ranging from $185 to $241.
