More than $20,000 worth of one family's belongings have been stolen from a family's storage unit at Northwest Self Storage located at 202nd Avenue in Gresham, Oregon. Correy Thompson, who was renting two units at the facility, discovered the burglary on Feb. 9. She says she was organizing one of her units and decided to check on the other.

“They ransacked the unit, took all the valuable items, threw all my non-valuable items back in the unit, and that’s all that’s in there,” Thompson told reporters. She said the door was locked so there was no obvious signs of a break-in from the outside.

Thompson said she had the only keys in her possession; however, the storage unit next to her had been empty for some time and was usually unlocked. Now, she questions whether a burglar could have accessed her unit from there.

Some of the valuables she says are missing include over $10,000 in Lego sets, DJ equipment, tools, and other collectibles. "We’re literally at over $22,000 of stolen items out of this unit,” she said.

Some of the items also have sentimental value. Thompson explains that many of the items came from her children's father, who died in June 2023. “My daughter, who is 13, is absolutely devastated. The Legos were what her and her dad did together. All these sets were a thing that my kids did with their father when he was alive.”

She filed a police report the day she discovered the burglary. While there is security camera footage, Gresham police said without an exact date of the burglary, it’s difficult to sift through weeks of footage.

Thompson said she last checked on the unit on Jan. 20, and she said at that point, everything was fine. “I triple-check the locks, and when I left the facility that day, it was secure,” she said.

Gresham police confirmed this was not the first burglary the facility has experienced. They said two burglaries were reported in August of 2024, and in November of that year there was unauthorized entry into an RV stored on the property.

Although police say Northwest Self Storage has always cooperated with them in the past, Thompson was unsatisfied with their response. “There was no sympathy. There wasn’t, 'Oh my gosh, I better go check this out,' no urgency for the safety of the community’s staff. Absolutely none,” she said. As a result, she has moved the rest of her items to a new facility.

She said prior to the burglary, she noticed other units with visible damage and also claimed the building where her items were stored has had a broken lock for several months, so anyone who entered through the facility's gate could then easily enter the building.

When contacted by the press, Northwest Self Storage said they were aware of the incident but did not respond to questions related to the claims of a broken lock or past break-ins.
