The City Commission in Mandan, North Dakota has voted unanimously to approve a self-storage moratorium. The ban goes into effect February 15, allowing building permit applications nearing submission to continue going through the process. The moratorium is set to last one year, but could be lifted sooner if new regulations are approved following the completion of a zoning and land development ordinance study. That study is expected to be completed late this year or early 2025.
“Current ordinance guidelines are relatively weak in terms of deciding where self-storage would go, amongst other things,” said City Planner Andrew Stromme. “Some of these corridors might not feel busy until 10 years from now. We know in the future there will be people living in those areas that will be able to benefit from (businesses) being more neighborhood commercial.”
“Mandan has been and continues to be a very pro-business community in terms of its regulatory policies and business assistance programs,” said Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC President and CEO Brenda Nagel. “We are confident that they have weighed the outcome of this (moratorium) with their pro-business plans and understand any impact on the business community.”
